Payyanur College, Kannur
The First to go Solar under Calicut University

Payyanur College, affiliated to Kannur University, is one of the few sought after Post Graduate institutions of higher education and learning in Kerala.

TIn order to teach and inspire the future generation about the need of environment friendly energy sources and energy conservation as well as for financial benefits, the College has decided to go for solar energy implementation.

21.6 kW Grid-tie SPV system
Date of Installation: March 2013

The college has thus approached TS for their requirements.

TS after taking a survey and study of the site, identified that the College being an educational establishment, requires power only in the day time.

Taking this into consideration, TS worked out a 21.6 Kw Grid-Tie System (Battery less solar PV system) for powering the loads of the main building of Payyannur College as desired by them.

System Components

The spv system offered by TS consisted of

  • 21.6kW Getwatt a-Si thin film solar module to provide 15% higher yield than Crystalline. The panels were installed over the roof of the building.
  • 21 kVA SMA PV string inverter, Sunny Mini Central 7000HV (SMC) of 7.5 kW nominal capacity, allowing more PV array with more PV modules in series to reduce DC cabling size. The Inverter has the best maximum power-point-tracking (MPPT) efficiency.
  • Sunny Webox, a powerful communication tool for monitoring of the PV energy contribution.

Project Yield

  • By the efficient system design & engineering, the total power consumption from the Grid was reduced by more than 90%.
  • Reduced the KSEB bill from Rs.40,000/- month to Rs.1,500/-month. It worked out to approx. RS.4,62,000/- year.
  • During the 25 years of life time the system will produce around 70000 kWhr of energy.
  • Saves 26 tons of CO2/year from being emitted into the atmosphere.
  • Payyannur College became the First College under Kannur University to have installed Solar PV System
